If one can handle stress, anxiety and trauma while waiting for GC, then its worth waiting. If not, people like me start looking at options. I applied for Canadian PR in 2008 and just did CDN landing last week which gave my family feel of "cold weather".
I will be completing my 5 years stay in USA this spring. Same story here - I never visited my home country since there is a lot of uncertainty around getting back.
We are 100% sure that we don't want to continue living in USA. Now its matter of time, until summer 2010, that we move on. Just not sure yet - whether it is my home country or Canada. If I get a job back home in India, I would love to do that. From what I have heard from friends, and from recruiters response, in home country, I think economy is picking up. I hope to get some decent job offer based on my unique job profile; if it doesn't work, we will move on to Canada.

i will ask the iv folks who keep in touch with USCIS if they know anything. AFAIK though, USCIS has come out with no answers other than quoting the non availability of adequate visa numbers. if there is any more info i will let you know...

All we are asking is a fair FIFO method and proper usage of visa numbers with transparency. The mere fact that they are not transparent raises many doubts in many minds. And these questions are not coming from those people who filed for their greecards an year or 2 ago..i just read a post in this same thread that this person has been waiting for his green card for 10 years...this is the height of ridiculousness and there is a limit for our patience, and this is it...

How would I-140 approvals impact the availability of visa numbers and isnt spill over already happening,ie, removal of country caps, as we have seen last year,last quarter as well in July VB?
More I140 approvals (of those who have already filed their 485) means more 485 eligible to be adjudicated. Longer the queue and more efficient the USCIS is - slower the PD movement.

I worked for a MNC here in first few yrs at US (from 2000) and they suck up your Tax return , used to give a worthless health insurance and 'sweat shop' ( this probably a worse word than 'chop shop') like allowance for 12-14 hrs of work . If you do NOT accept that or ASK QUESTION your flight tickets back to origin to will be arranged. I know these practices changed to some extent over a period of time but by that time I left them and started doing things on my own ... :) and i'm very happy since then.
Another thing , I worked for good but medium sized consulting firms with US after leaving those shops ( sweat/chop/body whatever kind u call them) and they do maintain perfect balance - hardly 30-40% is H1B - they pay market salary to the H1B's ,standard health insurance , always got paid if i worked beyond 8-9 hrs ...

I am not supporting this bill in anyway, I hate infy as much as I hate this bill. Remember these companies did not leave any stone unturned, milked the client every possible way and expoilted the employees to the maximum extent. In one another post - VLDRao was saying these companies does the tax filing on behalf the emoloyee, get the refund and again claim that tax in india using double taxation aoivdance treaty.

I have not received the physical receipt notice yet. But the online case status says "On July 11, 2007, we received this I485 APPLICATION" even though it was physically delivered and signed at Nebraska Service center on June, 15th. I will post once I get the physical copy of receipt notice to update every one.
May be some others that have already received the physical copy of receipt notices can clarify the difference between the receipt date on the notice vs. the online status that says ""On July 11, 2007, we received..."

I have talked to a representative and he very patiently explained me about the mess.
He clearly and very clearly told me that they have a deadline to send all receipts for June end and July 2nd filers by friday (tomorrow) or worst case monday.
He mentioned that they are working hard to meet this deadline.
Hope this clears the anxiety.
